Metro Hydrovac Toronto offers hydrovac rental, hydrovac truck rental, hydrovac rental with operator and weekly hydrovac rental rates throughout Toronto, Ontario and the GTA, backed by 20 years of running these trucks every day. A hydrovac rental is a booked block of time on a hydrovac truck, by the half-day, day, week or project, that includes a trained operator, fuel, insurance and maintenance, so your crew directs the work without owning or running the machine. Pick a term and the rate card tells you the price up front.

A utility contractor on a Highway 7 relocation booked one of our trucks for a full week. Same operator all five days, standby time between their tie-ins, and an invoice of $16,500 CAD that matched the weekly band on this page. In our experience, that consistency is what GCs are really renting: a truck that shows up every morning with someone who already knows the site.

6 Questions Every Toronto GC Should Ask Before Renting a Hydrovac Truck

Rental quotes look alike until the invoice arrives. Ask these six before you book anyone, including us.

#01

1. Is the operator included and whose employee are they?

An operator from the truck owner knows the machine. A brokered operator may be meeting the truck for the first time on your site.

#02

2. What tank size am I actually getting?

A 2,500 gallon unit and a 6,000 gallon unit work very differently on long jobs. Confirm it in writing.

#03

3. How is standby time billed?

On relocations the truck often waits for your crew. Know whether standby bills at the full rate or a reduced one.

#04

4. Is mobilization a fixed line?

Some quotes bury mobilization in the hourly rate, others add it later. It should be one published line.

#05

5. Who pays for disposal?

Slurry disposal can be a big number on a week-long job. It should be itemised by load.

#06

6. What happens if the truck breaks down?

Owned fleets with in-house maintenance can swap a truck. Brokers often can't.

Hydrovac Rental Options in Toronto

All rentals are operated. The rate includes the truck, a trained operator, fuel and insurance.

Full-Day Truck + Operator

Eight hours on site for $2,240-$3,600 CAD. The most common booking for potholing packages and design test pits.

Half-Day Rental

Four-hour minimum for $1,120-$1,800 CAD. Ideal for three or four potholes or a single crossing.

Weekly Rental

Five days with the same operator for $12,000-$22,000 CAD. Common on utility relocations and corridor work.

Multi-week terms with the same truck and operator, priced per day or per week after a site walk.

Standby Rental for Utility Relocations

Truck on site while your crew installs, ready to expose the next crossing or pull water from the trench.

Large Tank (6,000 gal) Rental

The large unit for wet ground, long runs and heavy slurry volumes, at the top of the day-rate band.

How an Operated Hydrovac Rental Works

A hydrovac rental from us is a block of truck time with one of our operators attached. Your site lead directs the work: where to dig, how deep, in what order. Our operator runs the truck, the wand pressure, the vacuum and the boom, and keeps the logs.

That split works well on jobs where your crew has a lot going on between exposures, like utility relocations, pipe installs and corridor work. The truck is there when you need the next crossing exposed, and on standby when you don’t. For defined scopes like a set of potholes or a fiber run, a quoted hydrovac excavation or slot trenching job may cost less than a rental term. We’ll tell you which is cheaper.

What’s included in every rental

  • Hydrovac truck (2,500 or 6,000 gallon tank)
  • Red Seal certified operator
  • Fuel, insurance and maintenance
  • Daily time sheet and exposure log
  • Locate verification each morning

What’s billed separately

  • Mobilization: one fixed line per term.
  • Disposal: by load at a licensed facility.
  • Weekend days: at the $500-$700/hr weekend band.

We don’t offer bare rentals. In our experience they look cheaper on paper and cost more the first time something goes wrong.

Field note from our crew

Nine times out of ten, this is where the previous contractor cut a corner: a rented truck, an operator who met it that morning, and nobody checking the locate sheet. Our operators know the truck everytime because it’s the one they run all year.

Which Rental Term Fits Your Job?

  1. Half-day ($1,120-$1,800): a few potholes, a single crossing, a quick verification.
  2. Full day ($2,240-$3,600): a potholing package, design test pits, a short trench.
  3. Week ($12,000-$22,000): utility relocations, corridor work, multi-phase installs.
  4. Project (multi-week): larger builds with the same truck and operator, priced after a site walk.

Commercial projects across the GTA get a free on-site assessment. Our lead technician brings a tank capacity worksheet, the locate map and disposal options, so the rental term you book matches the work.

Before day one we confirm your locate tickets cover the rental area and the operator photographs the marks on arrival each morning.

  2. STEP 02

    Inspection-Ready Exposure & Sign-Off

Daily time sheets and exposure logs signed by your site lead. Owner Alex Novak reviews weekly rental files so the invoice matches the sheets line for line.

Objections, Answered With Numbers

4 Reasons GCs Hesitate on Operated Rentals

“I'd rather rent the truck bare and use my own operator.”

In our opinion, a bare hydrovac rental moves all the strike risk, TSSA tank responsibility and insurance onto you. We only rent with our operators so that risk stays with people who run these trucks daily.

“Weekly rates seem high.”

A week runs $12,000-$22,000 CAD with operator, fuel and insurance. One gas or fiber strike on a relocation can cost more than that before downtime.

“I'll pay for standby I don't use.”

Standby is planned up front and logged daily. You see the hours your crew used and the hours the truck waited, signed by your site lead.

“What if the truck breaks down mid-week?”

We own three trucks and maintain them in-house. A breakdown means a swap, not a lost week.

Field Questions

Hydrovac Rentals FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a hydrovac truck?

With an operator: $1,120-$1,800 CAD for a half-day, $2,240-$3,600 for a full day and $12,000-$22,000 for a week.

What is the hourly cost of a hydrovac rental?

$280-$350 CAD per hour for a standard truck and $350-$450 for the 6,000 gallon unit, with a 4-hour minimum. Weekends run $500-$700.

Is renting a hydrovac expensive compared to owning one?

Far cheaper for almost every contractor. Owning means the truck payment, insurance, TSSA inspections, maintenance and a full-time operator.

How much does a hydrovac truck cost to buy?

A new Vactor 2100i or comparable unit costs well over half a million dollars before upfitting, insurance and upkeep. Used trucks still run into the hundreds of thousands.

Can I rent a hydrovac truck without an operator?

No. Every rental includes one of our own trained operators, which keeps insurance, maintenance and strike risk with an experienced crew.

What training do your rental operators have?

Red Seal certified, Ontario One Call trained, CSA Z247 ground disturbance protocol, confined space tickets and DZ licences for the trucks.

Do you keep the same operator on multi-day rentals?

Yes, wherever possible. Weekly and project rentals are scheduled so the same operator stays on your site.

Do you offer hydrovac rentals in Vaughan?

Yes. Vaughan rentals from Kleinburg to Concord use the same published rates, and our Toronto yard is 30-40 minutes away.

Is mobilization included in the rental rate?

Mobilization is a separate fixed line on the quote, as is disposal, so you can compare quotes line by line.
