Metro Hydrovac Toronto delivers daylighting services, utility daylighting, line locating verification and SUE test pitting throughout Toronto, Ontario and the GTA, backed by 20 years of non-destructive work. Utility daylighting is the process of exposing a buried line with pressurized water and vacuum so its true depth, size and material can be seen and measured, instead of trusted to paint marks on the surface. We work from Ontario One Call locates under CSA Z247 protocol and document every exposure so your locator and inspector can sign off on the first visit.

We did Bell Canada on Lakeshore Blvd: 180 ft of fiber daylighted over three days, every metre logged, and it ended with us on their regional dispatch list for emergency utility exposure. Last month a Port Lands telecom GC who had already had one dig-in with another crew brought us in for an $18,400 corridor. 3,500 PSI, 27 inch Hg vacuum, and the ON1Call locator signed off on the first visit.

The 6 Underground Utility Types Toronto Hydrovac Operators Expose Safely

Each utility type behaves differently under water and vacuum. These are the six we daylight every week, and what we watch for on each.

#01

Fiber optic cable

Often direct-buried or in thin HDPE conduit, sometimes only 450 mm down. We drop wand pressure near the mark and widen the hole sideways instead of digging straight down.

#02

High-pressure gas distribution mains

Enbridge steel and polyethylene mains inside the tolerance zone. Exposed by hand-held wand only, with the pipe coating inspected and photographed for the gas utility.

#03

Electrical duct banks

Concrete-encased Toronto Hydro and Alectra banks. We find both edges and the top so shoring and piles clear them by the required distance.

#04

Cast iron and ductile water mains

Old cast iron can be brittle. Hydrovac removes soil without leaning on the pipe, and we note joint locations for the engineer.

#05

Telecom copper and coax

Multiple carriers share boulevards, often stacked. We separate and label each line in photos so your designer knows which is which.

#06

Tracer wire and abandoned services

Dead stubs and tracer wire that confuse electronic locating. Daylighting settles the question with eyes on the line, not a beep on a receiver.

Scope Catalogue

Daylighting Services We Run in Toronto and the GTA

Daylighting is billed hourly at $350-$500 CAD or per run. Each type below comes with a depth, size and material log.

Fiber Optic Exposure

Exposing fiber bundles before boring, trenching or footing work. Our Port Lands corridor job exposed 180 ft over three days with zero damage.

Gas Line Pre-Dig

Inside the gas tolerance zone, mechanical digging is not allowed. We expose Enbridge mains and services by wand under CSA Z247 so your excavator can work beside them.

Hydro Vault Access

Clearing soil and water around vaults and chambers so crews can reach cables and transformers. Two vaults in a day is a normal pace.

Water Main Daylighting

Exposing mains and services for tie-ins, valve work and design verification, with joint and material noted.

SUE Quality Level A Test Holes

Test holes that meet Subsurface Utility Engineering Quality Level A, giving engineers surveyed horizontal and vertical positions.

HDD Bore Path Crossings

Every crossing on a horizontal directional drilling path exposed and flagged before the drill head goes in, plus standby vac for drilling mud.

Locate Mark Verification

When paint marks conflict or look wrong, a few test holes settle it before the schedule depends on a guess.

Telecom Corridor Daylighting

Long linear runs along congested corridors like Highway 7 in Markham, where several carriers share the same boulevard.

What Is Utility Daylighting?

Utility daylighting means exposing a buried service so you can see it. A crew uses a pressure wand to loosen the soil around the locate mark, and the vacuum lifts it out until the pipe, cable or duct bank is visible. Then we measure. Depth to top, outside diameter, material, condition and offset from a fixed reference all go onto a log sheet with photos.

Locate paint from Ontario One Call shows horizontal position within a tolerance zone. It does not show depth, and in older parts of Toronto it can be off by more than you would like. Daylighting closes that gap. It is the field step that produces Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Quality Level A data, the only level where the utility is physically seen.

If you also need the hole opened up for a crossing, tie-in or footing, the same crew switches to hydrovac excavation. For a narrow trench along the corridor afterward, we run slot trenching.

What we record at every exposure

  • Depth to top of utility, measured from finished grade
  • Outside diameter and material (steel, PE, cast iron, concrete-encased duct, HDPE conduit)
  • Horizontal offset from a fixed point or survey control
  • Coating or jacket condition, with photos from two angles
  • Tracer wire presence and any unrecorded lines found

Where Toronto Projects Need Daylighting Most

  1. Before HDD bores. Every crossing on the bore path, so the drill head never finds a cable by surprise.
  2. Inside the gas tolerance zone. Mechanical excavation is not allowed near an Enbridge main until it is exposed.
  3. Shoring, piles and footings near duct banks. You need both edges and the top of the bank, not a centreline.
  4. Design verification. Engineers want real depths before drawings are stamped.
  5. Conflicting or faded marks. A few test holes cost less than a redesign.

Field note from our crew

Hydrovac to a buried utility is like a dental X-ray to a tooth: you want the picture before you reach for the drill. On a Port Lands fiber corridor we found two lines nobody had marked. The client had already had one dig-in that year with another crew.

Daylighting vs Electronic Locating vs Ground Penetrating Radar

MethodWhat it tells youDepth accuracyFinds non-metallic lines?
Electronic locate (paint)Approximate horizontal positionNone to roughOnly with tracer wire
Ground penetrating radarAnomalies in the soilEstimatedSometimes
Daylighting (hydrovac)The actual line, seen and measuredExactYes

Electronic locating and GPR are useful for planning where to dig. Daylighting is how you confirm it. The three work together, and our crews coordinate with your locator on site.

What Affects Daylighting Cost in Toronto?

  • Depth and soil. Shallow fiber in sand is quick. Deep gas mains in clay take longer.
  • Number of exposures or run length. Per-hole, per-run or hourly, whichever fits.
  • Traffic control. Lakeshore, Highway 7 and downtown streets need more setup than a private lot.
  • Disposal. Slurry hauled to a licensed facility on its own line.
  • Documentation level. Standard logs are included. Survey-grade SUE deliverables are scoped up front.

Every quote itemises hourly rate, mobilization, disposal and locate coordination. Commercial projects across the GTA get a free on-site assessment, and the quote you recieve reflects the actual run, not a template.

5-Step Dig Protocol

How Our Daylighting & Line Locating Process Works, 5 Steps

  1. STEP 01

    Ontario One Call Locate Verification

We check your ON1Call ticket dates and members, walk the paint with your super, and photograph every mark before we start. On city property we add Toronto Municipal Code 847 coordination.

  2. STEP 02

    Truck Positioning & Traffic Control

Truck set where the boom reaches every hole on the run. Cones and signs per your traffic plan, with lane closures timed for Lakeshore, Highway 7 or wherever you are.

  3. STEP 03

    Pressurized Excavation & Depth Checks

Reduced wand pressure near the mark, widening sideways until the line shows. Some contractors over-charge for mobilization thinking clients wont check other quotes. Ours is one published line.

  4. STEP 04

    Inspection-Ready Exposure & Sign-Off

Depth, size, material and offset logged with photos at every exposure. Owner Alex Novak set the sign-off sheet format that gets us first-visit approvals, and still spot-checks it.

  5. STEP 05

    Compliant Disposal & Clean Handover

Holes backfilled, plated or left open as specd, slurry hauled to a licensed facility. It still blows our mind when we finish one and the locator signs on the spot.

Objections, Answered With Numbers

4 Reasons Teams Skip Daylighting (And Why It Costs Them)

“We already have locate marks.”

In our opinion, paint is a starting point, not a measurement. Marks only show horizontal position within a tolerance zone and nothing about depth. Daylighting gives you both.

“It's expensive per hour.”

A 10-20 ft run costs $1,500-$4,500 CAD. A fiber strike on a corridor like Lakeshore can run past $50,000 before outage claims. The math is not close.

“We'll lose a day waiting for it.”

Most runs finish in half a day. Two hydro vaults or a 16 ft fiber run in a shift is normal, and the excavator works behind us the same day.

“The locator will just come back anyway.”

Our logs are why they usually don't. We hold 100% first-visit utility coordination approval because every exposure arrives documented.

Field Questions

Daylighting & Line Locating FAQ

How much does daylighting cost per hour in Toronto?

$350-$500 CAD per hour for a daylighting crew. A 10-20 ft fiber or gas run is usually quoted at $1,500-$4,500, disposal included.

Is daylighting expensive compared to just digging carefully?

Hand digging near fiber and gas is slow and still risky. Daylighting costs a few thousand dollars; a single fiber or gas strike can cost tens of thousands plus downtime.

How much does daylighting a fiber or gas line cost?

A 10-20 ft run costs $1,500-$4,500 CAD. Hourly daylighting runs $350-$500, and large builds or fiber corridors are quoted per project.

What does a hydrovac truck cost, and do I need my own?

A new truck costs well over half a million dollars plus TSSA tank inspections and insurance. Booking operated hours is cheaper for almost every GC and utility contractor.

What training do your daylighting crews have?

Red Seal certified operators and Ontario One Call certified locators, working under CSA Z247 ground disturbance protocol.

What is SUE Quality Level A?

It is the highest accuracy level in Subsurface Utility Engineering, where the utility is physically exposed and its position measured. Daylighting test holes are how QL-A data is produced.

Do I need an Ontario One Call locate before daylighting?

Yes. Every dig starts with a valid Ontario One Call locate, and work on City of Toronto property also follows Toronto Municipal Code 847.

Do you daylight fiber in Markham?

Yes. The Highway 7 tech corridor and new subdivisions in Cornell and Cathedraltown keep our daylighting crews busy every season.

Can you stay on site during an HDD bore?

Yes. After exposing every crossing on the bore path we can stay on standby to vacuum drilling mud, billed at the same hourly band.
