runs slot trenching, hydrovac trenching, fiber trenching and narrow conduit trenching throughout Toronto, Ontario and the GTA, backed by 20 years of non-destructive digging. Slot trenching is the process of cutting a narrow linear trench, typically 6-12 inches wide, with pressurized water and vacuum, so fiber, conduit or irrigation lines can be laid across congested boulevards without striking the services already in the ground. The small footprint means less restoration, fewer permit headaches and faster production in busy rights-of-way.

Open-cut excavation around a known fiber line is like a Halloween-store scissors: cheap, fast, and you'll regret the result for months. On the Highway 7 tech corridor in Markham a fiber installer needed a trench through a stretch shared by three carriers. We exposed every crossing first, then slot trenched the run over four days for $22,800. Not a single existing line was nicked, and the splicer was on schedule.

## 5 Reasons Fiber Installers Choose Slot Trenching Over Open-Cut Excavation

Fiber and conduit crews switch to slot trenching for the same five reasons, usually after one bad open-cut job.

#01

### 1\. Crossings stop being a gamble

Every existing line in the path is exposed by water, not found by a bucket. Corridors like Highway 7 can have five or more crossings per hundred metres.

#02

### 2\. Restoration shrinks

A 6-12 inch slot means a narrow asphalt or sod patch instead of a full-lane reinstatement. That is often the biggest saving on the job.

#03

### 3\. Permits get simpler

Smaller footprints and shorter lane closures make right-of-way permits easier to get and cheaper to hold.

#04

### 4\. Spoil leaves with the truck

No spoil piles on the boulevard or in the gutter. Everything goes into the tank and off to a licensed facility.

#05

### 5\. Production stays predictable

No stops for hand digging at every crossing. A crew can plan metres per day and hit them.

Scope Catalogue

## Slot Trenching Services Across Toronto and the GTA

Billed hourly at $300-$450 CAD for short runs, or per kilometre for corridors.

### Fiber Optic Trenching

Narrow trenches for fiber conduit along boulevards and private property, crossing existing telecom without damage.

### Electrical Conduit Trenching

Conduit runs for lighting, EV chargers, signage and building feeds, cut through congested ground.

### Irrigation Line Installation

Irrigation mains and laterals around commercial lots and municipal boulevards, crossing live services safely.

### Utility Interconnects

Short trenches tying new services into existing lines, with every crossing exposed and logged.

### Fiber Laterals to Buildings

Short laterals from the street to a building entry, usually one-day jobs with the splicer in the next morning.

### Boulevard & ROW Crossings

Trenches across municipal boulevards and rights-of-way where permits demand a small footprint.

### Drainage Pipe Trenching

Narrow trenches for perforated drains and small storm pipes around buildings and lots.

### Tracer Wire Runs

Tracer wire installed alongside non-metallic conduit so future locates can find it.

## What Is Slot Trenching?

Slot trenching is linear excavation done with a hydrovac truck. Instead of a trencher chain or bucket, a crew walks the route with a pressure wand and the vacuum dig tube, cutting a narrow slot, usually 6-12 inches wide, to the depth the conduit needs. Every existing service in the path is exposed in the process.

It is the go-to method for fiber optic laterals, electrical conduit, irrigation lines and small drains through ground that is already crowded. Before a long run, we usually

daylight the existing lines

[/daylighting-line-locating/ →](/daylighting-line-locating/)

at each crossing so the route can be adjusted before the slot is cut. For multi-week corridor work, many contractors book an

operated hydrovac rental

[/hydrovac-rentals/ →](/hydrovac-rentals/)

 by the week.

### Slot trenching vs micro-trenching

Micro-trenching uses a saw to cut a very shallow slot in pavement. It is fast on clean asphalt, but it cuts whatever sits shallow underneath. Slot trenching with hydrovac goes deeper, crosses existing services safely and works in soil, sod and gravel as well as under pavement.

## Open-Cut vs Slot Trenching: Side by Side

| Factor | Open-cut trench | Hydrovac slot trench |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Trench width | 450 mm and up | 150-300 mm |
| Crossings | Hand dug, slow, risky | Exposed by water as part of the cut |
| Spoil | Piled beside trench | In the truck tank |
| Restoration | Wide asphalt and sod patch | Narrow strip |
| Lane closure time | Longer | Shorter |
| Strike risk | High on congested routes | Near zero |

> **Field note from our crew**
>
> Nine times out of ten, this is where the previous contractor cut a corner: they ran a trencher through the “empty” part of the boulevard and found the tracer-less fiber the hard way. We expose first, everytime.

## Where We Slot Trench in the GTA

- **Highway 7 tech corridor, Markham:** fiber laterals into office campuses and long corridor runs shared by several carriers.
- **New subdivisions in Cornell and Cathedraltown:** conduit and service runs across boulevards before final paving.
- **Commercial lots in Streetsville and Mississauga:** irrigation and lighting conduit around islands and curbs.
- **Toronto rights-of-way:** short crossings where Toronto Municipal Code 847 and permit conditions favour a small footprint.

## What Affects Slot Trenching Cost?

1. **Run length and depth.** Longer and deeper runs take more hours.
2. **Number of crossings.** Each one adds exposure time and logging.
3. **Surface.** Asphalt needs saw-cutting; sod and gravel do not.
4. **Traffic control.** Lane closures on busy roads add setup.
5. **Disposal and reinstatement.** Each scoped on its own line.

Short runs bill at $300-$450 CAD per hour. Corridors are priced per km after a route walk, and commercial projects get a free on-site assessment.

5-Step Dig Protocol

## How Our Slot Trenching Process Works, 5 Steps

1. STEP 01

    ### Ontario One Call Locate Verification

We walk the route against your ON1Call ticket and flag every crossing. Right-of-way permits and Toronto Municipal Code 847 checked before day one.

2. STEP 02

    ### Truck Positioning & Traffic Control

Truck leapfrogs along the route with lane closures set to your traffic plan. Asphalt saw-cutting is coordinated where the trench crosses pavement.

3. STEP 03

    ### Pressurized Trenching & Depth Checks

Crossings exposed first, then the slot cut to depth with water and vacuum. Some contractors over-charge for mobilization thinking clients wont check other quotes. Ours is one line.

4. STEP 04

    ### Inspection-Ready Trench & Sign-Off

Depth logged along the run and at every crossing. Owner Alex Novak still checks corridor logs on long runs before they go to the utility.

5. STEP 05

    ### Compliant Disposal & Clean Handover

Conduit laid by your crew or ours, trench backfilled to spec, spoil hauled away. Trust us, you're in good hands.

Objections, Answered With Numbers

## 4 Objections Fiber Contractors Raise About Slot Trenching

### “A trencher is cheaper per metre.”

In our opinion, only on open ground with nothing buried. Once a corridor has crossings, every one has to be hand dug anyway, and the trencher sits idle. Slot trenching handles both in one pass.

### “We'll lose production.”

A full day usually covers 40-120 m depending on crossings. A 120 m Cornell boulevard run took two days for $6,800 CAD, with a fraction of the open-cut restoration.

### “Corridor pricing is hard to budget.”

We publish a per-km range of $45,000-$180,000 CAD and narrow it after a route walk. The final quote itemises saw-cutting, disposal and reinstatement.

### “Micro-trenching saws are faster.”

On clean pavement, maybe. They also cut whatever is shallow underneath. We expose first, so nothing in the path gets cut.
