Metro Hydrovac Toronto

[/ →](/)

handles pile hole excavation, hydrovac pile holes, helical pile prep and caisson excavation throughout Toronto, Ontario and the GTA, backed by 20 years of foundation-side work. Hydrovac pile hole excavation is the process of clearing each pile or footing location with pressurized water and vacuum down to design depth, so augers, helical drivers and caisson rigs never meet a buried gas, hydro or fiber line on the way down. Holes stay plumb with no sidewall vibration, which matters next to existing footings, and spoil leaves the site in the tank.

Near Pearson Airport in Mississauga, a foundation contractor had a set of pile locations running through a corridor of buried electrical and telecom. We cleared every hole to depth in one day for $9,200, hauled the spoil away and handed the auger crew a clean path. Nobody on that site had to explain a strike to the airport authority, which was the point.

## The 7 Things Foundation GCs Should Verify Before Hydrovac Pile Hole Work

A pile hole job goes well when these seven items are sorted before the truck arrives. We walk through each one on the free site assessment.

#01

### 1\. Valid locates at every pile location

Not just the property. Every pile, caisson and footing location should sit inside a current ON1Call ticket area.

#02

### 2\. Design depth and diameter per hole

Standard holes are 4-6 ft. Deeper caissons and larger diameters change the truck, the time and the disposal volume.

#03

### 3\. Frost depth for footings

In the GTA, footings typically need to reach 1.2 m to get below frost. Confirm with your engineer before we cut.

#04

### 4\. Distance to existing footings

Next to an existing foundation, sidewall stability matters. Hydrovac does not vibrate the soil the way an auger can.

#05

### 5\. Access for the boom and hose

Backyards and side yards are fine with a long hose. Tell us gate widths, overhead wires and where the truck can park.

#06

### 6\. Spoil plan

Spoil leaves in the tank. If you want it stockpiled on site instead, say so and we'll plan for it.

#07

### 7\. Inspection timing

If an inspector needs to see open holes, we coordinate the schedule so holes are not left open overnight without protection.

## Pile Hole Excavation Services We Run in Toronto

From a single deck footing next to a gas service to a full pile set for a commercial canopy. Billed at $400-$600 CAD per hour or per set.

### Helical Pile Preparation

Each helical pile location cleared to depth so the driver head never meets a service. Common on additions, decks and sunrooms beside gas and hydro.

### Caisson Exposure

Opening caisson locations to confirm nothing is in the shaft path before the rig drills. Pylon signs, light standards and canopy columns.

### Foundation Potholing

Test holes at foundation corners and column lines to find utilities before excavation and shoring are designed.

### Retaining Wall Holes

Post and pier holes along property lines where fiber, gas or water often run in the boulevard.

### Sign & Light Pole Bases

Commercial sign and light standard bases in parking lots and plazas, usually crowded with lighting cable and storm pipe.

### Deck & Addition Footings

Residential and light commercial footings next to existing services, without vibration near the house.

### Fence Post Holes Near Utilities

Long fence runs over marked utilities, where one wrong auger hole costs more than the whole fence.

### Substation Pier Holes

Pier holes in and around utility substations with tight clearances and dense grounding grids.

## Why Use Hydrovac for Pile Holes?

Helical piles, sonotube footings and caissons all have the same weak point: something has to make the first hole, and that something usually has teeth. On a GTA lot with gas, hydro and fiber running through the yard or boulevard, an auger is a gamble.

Hydrovac pile hole excavation removes the gamble. Water cuts the soil, the vacuum lifts it, and any service near the hole shows up long before it can be hit. Once the hole is clear to depth, your auger rig or helical driver goes in at full speed. On a site with buried services we expose each one with

hydrovac excavation

[/hydrovac-excavation/ →](/hydrovac-excavation/)

first, and on a long run of locations we often

daylight the utility line

[/daylighting-line-locating/ →](/daylighting-line-locating/)

end to end so the whole layout can be adjusted at once.

### What makes a good pile hole

- **Plumb.** Straight sides keep the pile or sonotube aligned.
- **Clean.** No loose spoil at the bottom to compress later.
- **Stable sidewalls.** No vibration, which matters next to existing footings and slab edges.
- **To design depth.** Below frost depth in the GTA, typically 1.2 m or more for footings.

## Pile Hole Methods Compared

| Method | Utility strike risk | Vibration near footings | Spoil handling | Best use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Auger rig only | High on congested lots | Moderate | Piled on site | Open lots, no services |
| Hand digging | Low but slow | None | Piled on site | One or two shallow holes |
| Hydrovac | Near zero | None | In the tank | Any lot with buried services |
| Hydrovac then auger | Near zero | Low | Mostly in the tank | Deep or large diameter piles |

> **Field note from our crew**
>
> Nine times out of ten, this is where the previous contractor cut a corner: they augered the first hole “just to check.” On a Bloor West Village addition that first hole would have landed 200 mm from the gas service. We found it at hole number three, everytime you look at the logs.

## Where We Dig Pile Holes Across the GTA

- **Toronto infill and additions:** Bloor West Village, Leaside, the Beaches and East York, where gas services run close to the house.
- **Commercial canopies and pylon signs:** Airport Corporate Centre, Dixie Rd and Steeles Ave plazas, full of lighting cable and storm pipe.
- **Retaining walls along property lines:** Unionville and Markham, where fiber often sits in the boulevard.
- **Pearson-area foundations:** where a strike on airport infrastructure brings a lot more than a repair bill.

## What Affects Pile Hole Cost?

- **Number of holes and depth.** A 4-6 ft set is $1,200-$3,500 CAD. Deeper caissons bill hourly.
- **Soil and frost.** Clay and frozen ground take longer. Heated water handles winter work.
- **Access.** Long hose runs and tight side yards add setup time, not a separate fee.
- **Disposal.** Spoil leaves in the tank and goes to a licensed facility on its own line.

5-Step Dig Protocol

## How Our Pile Hole Excavation Process Works, 5 Steps

1. STEP 01

    ### Ontario One Call Locate Verification

We match every pile location to your ON1Call ticket, photograph the marks and flag each hole with its number from your drawing.

2. STEP 02

    ### Truck Positioning & Traffic Control

Truck staged within boom or hose reach of every hole. Ground protection mats go down on lawns and driveways before the hose moves.

3. STEP 03

    ### Pressurized Excavation & Depth Checks

Each hole cut with 3,500 PSI water and checked against design depth and plumb. Some contractors over-charge for mobilization thinking clients wont check other quotes. Ours is on the rate card.

4. STEP 04

    ### Inspection-Ready Holes & Sign-Off

Depths, diameters and any utilities found are logged per hole. Owner Alex Novak reviews pile logs on foundation jobs, because an auger crew is going in right behind us.

5. STEP 05

    ### Compliant Disposal & Clean Handover

Holes covered or handed straight to the pile crew, spoil hauled to a licensed facility, site left tidy. It still blows our mind when we finish one.

Objections, Answered With Numbers

## 4 Questions Foundation Crews Ask Before Booking Hydrovac Pile Holes

### “Our auger is faster.”

In our opinion, an auger is faster right up until it finds a gas service. We clear the hole, then your auger or driver goes in at full speed. Most sets take a single day.

### “Hydrovac holes cost more than augered ones.”

A 4-6 ft set runs $1,200-$3,500 CAD. A struck gas line next to a house costs far more and stops the job. On congested lots the hydrovac set is the cheaper path.

### “Water will soften the soil around our footings.”

We control water volume at each hole and vacuum it out immediately. Holes stay plumb and sidewalls stay intact, without the vibration an auger puts into an existing foundation.

### “We can't get a truck into the backyard.”

You don't need to. The truck parks on the street or driveway and the hose reaches up to 200 ft, through gates and around corners.

Field Questions

## Pile Hole Excavation FAQ

### How much does hydrovac pile hole excavation cost?

Pile holes 4-6 ft deep run $1,200-$3,500 CAD per set, or $400-$600 per hour for larger foundation jobs.

### What is the hourly cost for a pile hole crew?

$400-$600 CAD per hour with a 4-hour minimum. Simple holes on standard specs can bill at the $280-$350 standard truck rate.

### Is hydrovac expensive for pile holes?

Less than you'd think. A full set often costs about the same as a day of hand digging, and it removes the strike risk entirely.

### What does a hydrovac truck cost, and does that affect pile hole pricing?

Trucks like the Vac-Con V390 cost well over half a million dollars plus inspections and insurance. The hourly rate covers the truck, two operators and fuel, so you never carry that capital cost.

### What training do your pile hole operators have?

Red Seal certified operators, Ontario One Call certified locators, and crews trained in OHS Reg 213/91 excavation safety and CSA Z247 ground disturbance.

### How deep can you dig a pile hole?

Standard sets are 4-6 ft. Caissons and deeper footings can go much further in stable soil; we scope depth per hole on the quote.

### Will hydrovac damage my existing foundation?

No. There is no vibration, and water is vacuumed out as we go, so sidewalls and adjacent footings stay stable.

### Have you done pile holes near Pearson Airport?

Yes. We completed a Pearson Airport site pile hole job in Mississauga for $9,200 in a single day.
